If you're new to playing Crystal Singing Bowls, here are some tips to help you get started.
Step 1: Choose the Right Mallet
The tool you use to play your Crystal Singing Bowl greatly affects the sound it produces. There are two common types: mallets and strikers. Both produce a similar tone, but each has its own properties and can be advantageous depending on the bowl.
The rubber mallet is well suited to high C notes and 528 Hz bowls, while strikers are very effective with clear style bowls. If you're working with a bowl that doesn't rise easily into its voice, a crystal or acrylic striker may help it sing. Choose the accessory you prefer, and experiment to find the right match for your bowl.
Step 2: Find the Right Place to Play

The environment you play in shapes the sound. Look for a quiet, peaceful space where the tone can resonate without interference. A carpeted room, or an outdoor area with natural surroundings, creates an ideal setting.
Step 3: Activate the Bowl
Hold the mallet gently and give the outer side of the bowl a light tap to bring it into vibration. You can also produce a sustained, singing tone by circling the mallet slowly around the outside of the bowl. Experiment with how firmly you tap and how quickly you circle to find the sound you're after.
Every bowl is a unique creation, and each one has its own voice — its own natural threshold of vibration. To find it, apply a balanced amount of pressure and speed, and the bowl will rise easily into its tone.
Two bowls of the same type and size can sound different from one another. We recommend embracing each bowl and working with it to find its natural expression. 🤍
Step 4: Explore Different Sounds
Playing at different positions around the bowl produces a wide range of sounds. Experiment with different mallets and techniques to discover the full character of your instrument. With time and practice you'll develop your own playing style.
Clear style bowls cost more than frosted white bowls, but they offer the most premium sound quality, along with a range of different tones and frequencies depending on how you play them. While a full 7pc set is the most premium option available, we always recommend having at least one clear style bowl in your collection.
