Step 1: Choose the Right Mallet

The type of mallet you use to play your crystal singing bowl can greatly affect the sound it produces. There are two common types of mallets - mallets and strrikers.  Mallets and strikers both produce a similar sound, but each have unique properties and can be advantageous to have depending on the type of your sound bowl.  For example, the rubber mallet is best suited for high C notes and 528hz bowls, while the strikers are very effective when used with clear style singing bowls.  If you are trying to work with a bowl that doesn't rise easily into its voice or natural threshold of vibration, a crystal or acrylic striker may help it to sing.  Choose the type of accessory that you prefer and experiment with different ones to find the perfect match for your crystal singing bowl.

Step 2: Find the Right Place to Play

The environment in which you play your crystal singing bowl can also impact its sound. Look for a quiet and peaceful space where the sound can resonate without any interference. A carpeted room or an outdoor area with natural surroundings can create an ideal environment for crystal singing bowl playing.

Step 3: Strike the Bowl

Hold the mallet gently and strike the side of the bowl to produce an initial sound. You can also produce a sustained, singing tone by running the mallet around the rim of the bowl. Experiment with the strength of your strikes and how quickly you circle with the mallet to create the perfect sound.

After a singing bowl forms, it is a unique creation and each one will have its own voice or natural threshold for vibration.  To find the natural threshold, apply a balanced amount of strength and speed, and the singing bowl will rise easily into its voice.

Playing with different positions around the rim of the bowl can produce a wide range of sounds. You can also experiment with different mallets and striking techniques to discover the full potential of your crystal singing bowl. With time and practice, you'll develop your unique playing style and find the perfect match for your bowl.

Clear styles bowls are more expensive than a frosted white bowl, but they offer the most premium quality sound, as well as, a range of different sounds, frequencies, and tones depending on how you play them.  While a full 7pc set is the most premium singing bowl set available, we always recommend that you have at least one clear style bowl in your collection of sound healing resources.
