Mantra is one of the oldest forms of sound healing. Sacred Sounds are the underlying basis of human language, we use them intuitively to express emotions and to provide comfort, rebalancing and aligning energy within the body. The Oh or Whoa or Woe sound can express a sudden realization. This is also the same basic sound within Om. Ah, Awe, or Ah Ha are the same basic sounds in LAM VAM RAM YAM and HAM. The body naturally and spontaneously makes those sounds in association with states of understanding, so intentionally making them during the practice of mantra helps to create the conditions within the brain for realization.
Just as the Asanas of Yoga are dynamic physical expressions of the Chakras, Mantra is the dynamic auditory expression of the Chakras. While each culture has their own language, the vowels are the basis of each language, so the Sacred Sounds are universal and are accessible to all.
On each tuning fork there is the Chakra and its associated Seed Sound, mentally recite or pronounce the sound in conjunction with the tuning fork or right before application. You can establish a connection with the Seed Sound by repeating the mantra resulting in a stronger connection with the Chakra. Internally reciting the sound will then help to call upon the states previously achieved. Diffusing unwanted states or behaviors by disrupting them can be an effective approach.
The body-mind connection is a powerful thing, the flow of energy through the body can also be powerful. It may be a new experience for some people because it isn't the most common practice, but all you are doing is utilizing the full range of your vocal cords. Most people appreciate a singing voice or a deep voice, and people use their vocal ranges every day to communicate and express ideas and emotions. Essentially, it is just sound healing with your own natural sounds.
Repeating the same sound for the purposes of Mantra is very helpful because it establishes an energy pattern in the body from the coordinated movement of the mouth, throat, lungs, diaphragm, and stomach muscles. This effect is very similar to the effect caused by the flow of Hatha Vinyasa Yoga. You should be less concerned with what it sounds like and more focused on consistent daily practice, because the sounds you make will evolve over time as your body learns their correct pronunciation and as the voice seasons.
For example, to annunciate LAM you must first put the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, opening the throat (stimulating the Throat Chakra). This is a lower frequency sound so tucking the chin will help make the correct shape so you can access the lower ranges of the vocal cords. The vocal cords actually extend as far down as the stomach area, so this sound will send waves of vibration down into the lower chakras. Tensing the stomach muscles to employ the diaphragm will compress the lower regions of the body, helping to receive and strengthen those vibrations.
Each Seed Sound requires its own shape and tone. A specific configuration of movement, posture, and sound effectively tunes into and stimulates a specific Chakra and its associated region of the body, bathing it in healing vibration and allowing for greater levels of relaxation and flow of vital energy.
YAM is the Seed Sound of the Heart Chakra, to make the sound you must add a 'Ya' sound before AM. To make the Ya sound, you must employ the muscles in the top of the mouth and back of the throat. With the sound YA and AM, you are stimulating the physiology associated with higher chakras and the lower chakras. The heart center is the middle chakra, so this is a balanced sound that draws upon the higher and lower energies.
ONG is a sound associated with the Crown Chakra. It also stimulates the higher chakras by utilizing the muscles in the top of the mouth and back of the throat. As a substitute for ONG, you can also recite AUM. Start with the sound AHHH and then slowly transition to the sound UUUMMM.
